Chapter 18

It was almost eight o’clock the next morning when Ricki opened her eyes and did a light, careful stretch. Her arms and legs encountered empty space, which meant she was alone.

She gently sat up. Her head was better, with the ache behind her temple keeping down to a steady whimper rather than the loud roar it had been before. But her muscles were sore from the beating they’d taken, not only from flying debris but from slamming into the ground. With a resigned sigh, she took two more Tylenol to stave off the worst of the discomfort and headed for the bathroom.

By the time she’d brushed her teeth, wrestled her hair into some semblance of a civilized presentation, and changed into fresh jeans and a wool shirt, there was a quick knock on the door, followed by Clay sticking his head around its edge.

He spotted her standing by the bed and grinned. “It looks like you’re decent, and we have a visitor.”

She was about to ask who when Clay stepped inside, followed by Anchorman.

Her mouth dropped open, and then she clamped it shut and made an attempt to look stern. It wasn’t easy considering how glad she was to see him, but she gave it a try. “What are you doing here? You’re supposed to be minding the diner and keeping an eye out for Lex, in case he shows up in the Bay.”

“Nice way to greet a guy who drove most of the night.” Unfazed by her scolding, the big Marine walked straight toward her and wrapped her in a gentle bear hug, which had her fighting tears. It was like being comforted by her dad, or her uncle—or an older brother even if they didn’t share a blood connection. Luckily her tears dried up the minute Anchorman stepped back and scowled at the bandage on her forehead.

“Marcie and Sam are taking care of business at the diner, with Dan hanging around to help them out. And Lex might make his way to the Bay, but from what I was told, he absolutely is here right now, and from the sounds of it, he might be blowing stuff up.”

Ricki put her hands on her hips and stared at Clay. “Oh? Who told you that?”

“You know I did,” Clay confirmed. “We need some help watching our backs while we try to get to the bottom of all this before we’re forced to head back to Seattle.”

“And watching your backs happens to be my specialty,” Anchorman declared. He moved forward, forcing Ricki up against the bed until she had no choice except to plop her backside onto the mattress. “You can tell me what’s going on while you’re sitting down.”

Ricki waited until he’d moved toward the chair tucked underneath the desk before she got to her feet again. “Stop being a bully, and I can tell you what’s going on over breakfast. I’m hungry. We also need to make an appearance before Jake comes looking for us.”

Anchorman pulled out the chair and straddled it.
